I have been doing a lot of thinking about what I should recommend for reading. So, I want to start with a quick general list.
- Robert Nozick The Examined Life – I have purchased this book several times, lent it, and never received it back. It is about the meaning of life.
- Plato The Republic – The first book of philosophy I ever read cover to cover. I have multiple translations. This is the most accessible.
- John Rawls Justice as Fairness: A Restatement – A summary of the greatest work of political philosophy of the 20th Century by the author. The original is worth reading too (A Theory of Justice).
- Heraclitus Fragments – Deep thoughts
- John Stuart Mill On Liberty and Utilitarianism – Freedom.
- Hannah Arendt Eichmann in Jurusalem – Some thoughts on Evil
- Charles Taylor The Malaise of Modernity– A Canadian!
- William Blake Selected Poems – We all need some poetry
- The Penguin Book of First World War Poetry – The best way to understand war.
- George Orwell Animal Farm – Some pigs are more equal than others, and we need some fiction.
